Hurricane Sandy Relief

Nantucket Lends A Hand

I am so proud to live on this island 30 miles out to sea when I see the community come together to help those in need.  Hurricane Sandy, for our little island was certainly stormy but we were not affected like those in New York and New Jersey.  Breaks my heart to see the photos and hear the stories.  I had friends that were without power for days.  Many people lost their homes and loved ones.  So my heart fluttered when I started to see my island friends come up with a plan to lend a hand.  There are a few events that I know of that will aid those affected by Sandy.  The information gathered is a combination of the Mahon About Town Newsletter and Facebook posts.

Here are the events:

Tonight, November 8th, Ventuno Restaurant will donate 50% of their sales to the hurricane relief.

Arlene O’Reilly and Michael O’Reilly will be collecting donations which may be dropped off at the Stop & Shop or the UPS Store.  The first shipment will leave tomorrow the 9th of November and the next shipment will leave the 16th of November.  For questions, volunteer opportunities or donations please cll Arlene at 508-325-7163.

Geoff Smith is also making collecting donations and filling his trucks with items. Please find a 30 second video that Lisa Frey of  Nantucket Event Media produced to get the word out.

Drop Off Locations: Crosswinds     Westmoor     SeaDog

What is needed:

Hand Warmers
Warm clothing
Cleaning supplies
Trash bags
Children's items (diapers, food, clothing)
Canned food

Bottled water

Work Gloves / Boots

There will also be an event that will take place on Sunday the 11th from 5-9pm at the Chicken Box.  So many wonderful people are involved in this.  To name a few, Greg Mehringer, Cate Raphael, Rocky Fox and many more.  Here is the description from their Facebook Event Page:

A benefit this Sunday from 5-9 pm to help those in need. This is all tentative but we should have a flyer out and more info by the end of the day. What we have so far. $10 suggestion donation. 50/50 raffle, silent auction items, cocktail of the night with 100% being donated back. Live local music. Nathan's Hot Dogs, Manhattan chowder, pastrami sandwiches, NY style pizza. All of the items that are listed here are also welcome to be dropped off. If you want to donate a silent auction item lease let us know. More to come.

If I had made any mistakes on the information or if there is something you feel I have missed, please feel free to make the corrections in the comments below.

Thank you Nantucket Community for always being so generous and giving!

Cheers!  I am donating a 24 pack of bottled water to the truck and plan to attend the fundraiser this Sunday.  Hope to see many of you out there!
