mirth and merriment

The Nantucket Arts Council's Shakespeare in the Garden event returns for its sixth year Thursday, June 28 from 6-8 PM. This year it moves to a new garden at 202 Eel Point Rd. Shakespeare in the Garden features music, revels, feasting, fire twirling, costumes, falconry, and, of course, Shakespeare. Artistic Director Meredith Martin describes it as “like our very own mini Renaissance Fair here on Nantucket.” Attendees are encouraged to don costumes and participate.

Martin has prepared a thirty minute excerpt from "Taming of the Shrew" featuring the following cast:

Petruchio. Adam Sodofsky
Kate. Ingrid Feeney
Baptista. Chuck Gifford
Bianca. Sarah Nabulsi
Lucention. Asa Jean
Tranio. Chapin Klein
Grumio. Chris Witte
Gremio. Frank Morral
Hortensio. Mark Carapezza
Widow. Susan Lucier
Biondello. Connor Gifford

Local gypsy band Coq Au Vin are set to accompany the players. Martin says, “'Taming of the Shrew' is a play that has been long thought to be controversial due the misogynist themes. But I believe that Shakespeare always has a reason for everything he writes and is poking fun at the issue of misogyny, roles of men and women, the games they play and how they play and manipulate to survive.”

Shakespeare in the Garden raises funds for the Nantucket Arts Council's scholarship fund which benefits Nantucket students pursuing higher education in the arts. Tickets are available at Mitchell's Book Corner, Bookworks, Graphicas Gallery, The Antiques Depot, in front of The Nantucket Looms, by phone at (508) 228-8588 or at the door.
