Helping Animals Affected by Hurricane Sandy

On Nantucket we mobilze and organzie in response to disaster, whether it be national or local,  and I'm always impressed by the level of generosity and care that shines through the dark times.  In the coming days there will be a collection of donated goods shipped to New York & New Jersey.  There will be a benefit fundraiser held at the Box.  These are wonderful ways to help, but let me also remind you of the companion animals who are also suffering.  There are national organzzations that are on the ground in the hardest hit regions doing search and rescue.  The Humane Society of the United States has teams of workers searching homes for abandon pets, people staffing hotlines for pet owners seeking help, fundraisers and collections.

The easiest way to donate is to text the word ANIMALS to 20222, donating $10 to the HSUS Emergency Relief Fund. It is recommended that you also follow their Facebook or Twitter for latest information.

Donate supplies to Adopt NY, who is distributing them to the 44 shelters & rescuse they work with in the Metro NY region.  If you live within 25 miles of Manhattan, you are eligible to be a foster parent.  Displaced and homelss pets in that area are desperate to find a safe, dry place to settle into.

Best Friends Animal Society is coordinating with many shelters to bring in supplies, provide volunteer support and keep the doors open.  You can follow their news here.

Please remember that these animals are depending on us for help.  Give what you can, open your home or send supplies.  Thank you as always for being thougthful and generous.  If you know of other animal related organizations that are hosting fundraisers, collections or more, please post a comment below.
