The Blasting Begins on Monday
Sunday is the last day we can walk, run and ride relatively freely in the Nantucket wilderness until next year.
Shotgun season for white-tailed deer on Nantucket begins a half-hour before sunrise on Monday morning, Nov. 30 and runs through Dec. 12. Deer hunting with guns, muskets to be precice, continues Dec. 14 through Dec. 31. Bow hunting season for deer, which started on Oct. 19, is just the silent warm-up for the onslaught of off-island hunters headed over to Nantucket right after Thanksgiving to blast away at will in search of venison.
Arm yourself and your dog(s) with orange clothing and collars, belch fart loudly, sing songs at full volume and carry on noisy conversations with fellow walkers and or your dog when out walking. Stick open areas where deer can't hide and hunters don't hunt such as Smooth Hummocks, Head of the Plains, the beaches and shoreline, and downtown. Report hunters hunting within 500 feet of occupied houses and remember that they can only hunt a half-hour before sunrise to half-hour after sunset Monday through Saturday. If you're aware of or witness any violations or what you think are violations, call Nantucket's Environmental Police Officer Keith Robinson at 508-257-6932 and leave a message.
Stay safe out there!
