Susan Lister Locke--unique jewelry
Based on Nantucket Island, Susan Lister Locke incorporates her passion for high karat gold, lively gemstones, texture & organic elements to create exquisitely unique pieces.
“While I am inspired by many artists & disciplines, I am most fascinated by nature. Living on an island thirty miles out to sea provides me with endless inspiration, whether it be marine life, sunrises & sunsets & all the breathtaking “theater” that Mother Nature provides on her big screen of the sky, or the flora & fauna of the moors that change with the seasons. While I may start with an idea or a specific image, it’s where shapes & forms take on lives of their own that often surprises me. It is as if what emerges as a finished design was there the whole time, with its own energy, just waiting to be released,” she says of her exciting discovery process.
Commission work is a specialty. Susan says, “I believe that all jewelry has a story & I love being part of the process of creating that story, whether it be designing a wedding ring, scouting out a special stone, researching a family crest for a client, or recycling a sentimental but dated piece & giving it new life.”
Color is also important. “At first it was colored golds & from there it was a natural progression to incorporate lustrous pearls & intensely colored precious & semi-precious gemstones. I need to respond to the gems, they can get my heart pounding & take my breath away. I come by it naturally, both my Mother & Father loved jewelry & gemstones. My Father instilled in me the importance of using only high quality stones. I wish they were here to share in my joy of making beautiful jewelry & making it my life’s passion.”
