Distress Signal, a novel by Jack Comeau

My novel Distress Signal is a haunted tale of romantic, seagoing adventure, set on Nantucket. This is my attempt to capture the elusive passions that swirl through my head on every Nantucket visit. It is a magical place, my favorite place.
I come from a long line of Nova Scotia, Grand Banks fishermen. The sea is never far from my thoughts. I've crewed on century old schooners Barks and Briggs. The feel of a wooden deck rising and falling beneath my feet, the sound of an old hull groaning against the strain of swells. The cannon report rumble of fore sails as they billow down in a race for the bowsprit at day's end. The quiet calm of watching the setting sun find its face in the glass flat sea of a protected cove, the thrill of watching lightning dance its arthritic fingers across the sea surface. These are all things that will forever ride in my heart, things that land locked people may never know.
As Distress Signal tells its story, I hope that I also capture the mood of my memories. Distress Signal happens mostly on Nantucket itself but the sea is never far from its pages. Distress Signal also mixes in time travel, ghosts and past lives. It's a story of finding redemption through finding a long ago love that opens up a man's heart.

I bought this on a whim and am pleased I did. The protagonist is quirky and well thought out and the story was fun to read. I was so involved in the book I finished it the night I bought it. I'm glad I didn't pass on this book, give it a try and you'll find a remarkably good read.

I bought this book on Friday and finished mid-day Saturday... The book is written so visually, it was like a memory of my own somehow. The fine line between reality and magic was deftly walked by an expert craftsman. I feel like I've just walked out of an epic film! My heart was pounding, I gasped out loud, what a fun read!! Looking forward to anything from this author.

If you like the historical time travel romance/ adventure novels of Diana Galbadon, you will love this. If you like the historical New England novels of William Martin, you will love this as well. I have spent a lot of time in Nantucket because I have family there, but since reading this, I will always feel the past come alive around me when I am there. The scenes of shipwreck rescue are compelling. The characters are rich and well developed. If you know anyone who loves the Cape and the Islands, they HAVE to have this book.

Outstanding!

Born and raised in New England this book hits very close to home. It was actually very educational as well in regards to the whaling history. Jack's descriptive style of writing allowed me to actually visualize the story as it progressed from scene to scene. I could feel George's anxiety as a typical cubicle worker in one of the many office buildings in Boston, I've been there! I've also been to many of the establishments mentioned where George and his coworkers blew off some steam after work. I could feel George's first steps on the cobblestone roads of Nantucket and sense the adventure he felt as he walked pass the weather beaten shops and buildings. In the end the book sends a strong message to the reader, follow your dreams!!! Don't be afraid to take a chance, you never know where it might lead you!!!
I would definitely recommend this book to everyone! Great Job Jack!!!
