Pan Nantucket Walk for Animals

Still feeling fit from my summer activities, I have once again committed to join Janet Forest, owner of Nantucket Pet Sitter, on her Pan Nantucket Walk for Nantucket Safe Harbor for Animals. This is the third consecutive year Janet has organized this event and she has raised more than $8000 from her first two walks. This year she has set a higher goal of $5000 and is well on her way to reaching it.

This year’s event is scheduled for Sunday, September 21 departing Madaket at 10 a.m. sharp. Janet and her pack will make their way down Madaket Road, turn on to Cliff Road and arrive at Children’s Beach just before noon.

After a quick break for lunch, the group will set off again winding their way through Nantucket’s downtown, up Main Street, down Orange Street, through the Rotary and onto Milestone Road. Then it’s the final stretch out to Sconset. Janet expects to arrive at Sconset Rotary between 2:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. As in past years, she will be posting her progress and photos on Nantucket Pet Sitter’s Facebook page. So let her know if you want to meet up with the walkers along the way.

Nantucket Safe Harbor for Animals has accomplished so much in its three-year history that walking 14 short miles seems a small feat in comparison. After reaching most their short term goals, the volunteers at NSHA are at a turning point where they can start thinking about loftier goals such as finding new a space, hiring qualified individuals who will help expand and promote their mission and offering even more services and support to the Nantucket community.

Every penny donated to the Pan Nantucket Walk will go to support the animal shelter. And every penny counts, so consider making a contribution of any amount. And if you are out on the roads on Sunday, Sept. 21 and you see a motley crew of people and dogs strolling along the bike path, that’s us! Give us a beep and a wave.
