Blooming Bids For Kids
The mission of Mentoring Youth Nantucket (MY Nantucket) is to work with local families to improve, enrich and broaden the lives of island children through support, friendship, and guidance of caring and responsible adult mentors, helping those children become healthy, independent, productive and responsible adults. This much needed Nantucket-based organization serves more than 200 students during the 2012-2013 school year, up from only 100 in the 2010 school year. Their One-to-one program matches an adult volunteer mentor with a deserving child mentee who has similar interests. Breakfast Buddies is the other major program in the Nantucket School system where juniors and seniors from Nantucket High School meet with elementary school kids prior to the school day with a healthy breakfast.
In order to provide these important services though, they need to raise funds. The annual event Blooming Bids for Kids has been held in various locations over the last several years and has found its new home at Bartlett’s Farm. The island’s landscaping and gardening community traditionally go all out to present their best, most creative work for this visually beautiful event. Decorative planters, floral arrangements and landscape offerings by gardeners, creative individuals and anyone with a green thumb who wishes to participate are offered during a silent auction while drinks and hors d’oeuvres are served. And there’s dancing.
So you can help in two ways. You can create and donate a planted container to be auctioned off. Or you can attend the live event on July 2 at 6pm. The silent auction drawing will be at 8:30 sharp. Tickets are $50 and are available at The Hub, ‘Sconset Market, Island Variety. Be sure to bring a friend or two to this fun event.
