Dr. Heidi Larson's new family practice opens June 16th

Nantucket Cottage Hospital’s newest primary care physician, Heidi Mae Larson, MD, will open her family practice on Monday, June 16, and is now accepting new patients.

Dr. Larson, who joins the NCH medical staff after operating a private family practice in Portland, ME for the past 11 years, is welcoming island patients of all ages to establish a primary care relationship with her new practice on Nantucket.

Located in the Anderson Building on the NCH campus, Dr. Larson’s office will be open Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Please call 508-825-1340 to become a patient of Dr. Larson.

“My family and I are very grateful for the warm welcome we have received on-island,” Dr. Larson said. “I look forward to getting to know people better and building relationships with patients over the next several months as I get my practice established.”

The proud mother of two college-aged sons, Alexander and Peter, Dr. Larson comes to Nantucket Cottage Hospital with extensive credentials and a history of leadership in the medical field.

A graduate of the University of Vermont College of Medicine, Dr. Larson founded and built her own private family practice in Portland, ME, in 2003. She served residencies at DeWitt Army Hospital in Ft. Belvoir, VA, as well as the Maine Medical Center in Portland, and was a Captain in the United States Army Medical Corps from 1992-1997.

Dr. Larson, 48, will bolster the hospital’s roster of primary care physicians following the departure of Dr. Nicole Steinmuller in 2013. Her hiring demonstrates Nantucket Cottage Hospital’s continuing efforts to provide the island community with a full complement of physicians of varying specialties, and options for primary care.

“Dr. Larson is an excellent addition to our medical staff at NCH and we’re excited to be bringing in a physician with her experience and background,” said Dr. Margot Hartmann, President and CEO of Nantucket Cottage Hospital. “Primary care is among our highest priorities, so we feel lucky to be adding a physician of her caliber to our staff of accomplished doctors and surgeons. Dr. Larson’s background in family practice aligns perfectly with our vision for assembling a team of physicians at NCH to meet the needs of the community.”

In 2012, Dr. Larson was honored as a McAfee Fellow by the Daniel Hanley Center for Health Leadership and completed its Physician Executive Leadership Institute Advanced Course. Her private practice was repeatedly recognized by the Maine Medical Center Physicians Health Organization as a “Practice of Distinction” for the management of chronic illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, asthma, and depression.

Dr. Larson is an avid runner, cross-country skier and mountain biker, and is looking forward to continuing all those activities on Nantucket. She enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, and playing with her new puppy, a chocolate lab named “Baxter.”

Dr. Larson is a member of the Massachusetts General Physicians Organization (MGPO) group practice at NCH, joining Dr. George Butterworth, Dr. Margaret Koehm, Dr. Jock Lawrason, and Dr. Diane Pearl.
