Plein Air Art Retreats in Greater Light Garden

NHA and AAN Host Plein Air Art Retreat in Greater Light Garden
July 27, August 3, and August 10

Nantucket, MA – The Nantucket Historical Association (NHA), in partnership with the Artists Association of Nantucket (AAN), announces one-day plein air artistic retreats in the NHA’s Greater Light Garden at 8 Howard Street on Fridays, July 27, August 3, and August 10, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Ben Simons, the NHA’s Robyn & John Davis Chief Curator and AAN’s artists/instructors collaborate for three inspirational programs, each of which includes an insider’s tour of the NHA’s historic property Greater Light, art instruction by prominent local artists in the Greater Light Garden, and a catered picnic lunch. The cost of the program is $200 for NHA and AAN members and $250 for nonmembers.

“The NHA is delighted to offer a series of three art classes in the Greater Light garden in partnership with the Artists Association of Nantucket,” says Melissa Kershaw, Public Programs and Outreach Coordinator. “Hanna and Gertrude Monaghan, the Quaker sisters who creatively transformed an old livestock barn into a summer oasis and artists’ retreat now known as Greater Light, drew inspiration from their beautiful garden. We can feel the Monaghans’ spirit in this colorful outdoor space, and we’re sure that their example, combined with Greater Light and its environs, will inspire students in these plein air classes.”

Participants at all levels are invited to hone their skills under the guidance of AAN artist instructors. On July 27, Julie Gifford will lead a plein air sketching class; David Lazurus will instruct a plein air watercolor class on August 3; and William Welch will guide students in plein air pastel drawing on August 10.

Ben Simons remarked that “the opportunity to paint in the garden of Greater Light, surrounded by the world of the Monaghan sisters and guided by the outstanding instruction of artist instructors from the Artists Association, is not to be missed.”

The garden of this historic property once served as a gathering spot for teas, a venue for parties and performances, and the perfect backdrop for summer visits with the family. Meticulously restored by the NHA, Greater Light reopened to the public in 2011.
