Let me say this up front - I’m not known for getting lost while driving! In fact I always take a different route to my favorite hangouts just to see a new terrain. Back-roads are my favorites where I can wave to the cows and yell “Nice to see you!” to the alpacas and sheep. I took countless pictures of new born colts sleeping at their mother’s feet while driving by a horse farm, and I always find my way to my destination. My husband on the other hand would get lost driving home from work.
So to my utter amazement and consternation I had no idea where I was half the time while driving around Nantucket. What is it with this town?! It only has street signs at roads you cross, but not on the road on which you are presently driving. Maps help somewhat, but you need a companion rider who can do the quick research. The cars I have been renting do not have GPS, and I don’t own a smart phone.
There are signs, don’t misunderstand me! For instance I know which way to go to get to Halifax 486 Miles away, or where I should watch out for ducks at the Duck Crossing.
I know which way is the Police Station or where Benjamin Franklin’s mother was born in a house that stood 225 ‘ North and 52 degrees West from the spot I took a photo. I didn’t miss the turn off to Bartlett’s Farm and Cisco Brewery. I was even aware that the Russians weren’t coming. And saw countless houses with cute names on beautifully carved quarter boards.
So leaving my cynicism behind in Colorado, I only have a few questions. Wouldn’t it be a lot easier for Americans visiting this beautiful island, if they knew where they were at all times?!? They wouldn’t have to accidentally find Stop and Shop, and perhaps the traffic jams could be eased somewhat if people didn’t have to stop to wonder where they were heading.
While I was contemplating this mystifying issue, meandering through unknown streets, wondering where I was, lo and behold, I came across this apparition. Am I seeing right? Am I still on Nantucket?? Can this be true??
What a find!!
