Mary Beth Splaine Juries AAN Show, Real or Imagined? Friday, 6-8
The Artists Association of Nantucket (AAN) is pleased to announce the opening of its Juried Exhibition, Real or Imagined? on June 15, 6-8 P.M. Juried by well-known island resident, South Wharf Gallery owner and longtime member of AAN, Mary Beth Splaine, the exhibition will run through July 2 in the Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery, 19 Washington Street.
This themed show was the creation of AAN president Lynn Nicholas and organized with the hope of exploring the relationship between realism and the abstract art. “The AAN Gallery is known for showing traditional Nantucket landscape art, however many of our artists do experimental and abstract work,” said Nicholas. “This show is intended to feature those artists alongside more realistic art, and to celebrate the diversity of the art shown in the Gallery.”
A prior president of AAN and the former gallery owner and director of South Wharf Gallery, Mary Beth Splaine is no stranger to the art world. “She has been a long-time supporter of the arts and has encouraged many young island artists—we are honored to have her as a juror for this show,” said AAN curator of exhibitions Robert Frazier. “Mary Beth has an educated and keen eye and we’re delighted to welcome her to the gallery for what should be an exciting exhibition.”
The Solo Show Spotlight Artist during this exhibition is Virginia Chase, who will also discuss her techniques and painting style during a “Conversation with the Artist” on Tuesday, June 19 at 2 P.M. in the gallery, 19 Washington Street.
Real or Imagined? will be on display from June 15 through July 2 at the Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery, 19 Washington Street. To learn more about the AAN, visit the website at www.nantucketarts.org. For further information about AAN 2012 programs and events, please call 508-228-0722.
