Greta Feeney and Verdi at the Atheneum
Verdi and the Cult of Mary
This Friday, May 25th, Greta Feeney-Samuels presents a lecture/recital titled, 'Verdi and The Cult of Mary: A Study of Three Verdian Ave Marias.' The performance will be held in the Great Hall, 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
Greta, who has just completed her doctoral degree at SUNY Stony Brook College, will examine the way Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi managed to escape religious censorship and feature the devotional prayer to the Virgin Mary onstage in his operas. She will include a historical contextual discussion about 19th century Italian music and politics, and the Cult of Mary that arose out of a contempt for the corrupt male clergy.
Her talk will include musical excerpts, accompanied by Robert Behrman on piano, and then a full performance of three Ave Maria's from Otello, I Lombardi, and the Requiem.
Greta is General Director at Nantucket Island Arts & Music. Robert Behrman is a pianist and composer and serves as Music Director at the First Congregational Church.
